Brielle Historian, John Belding, wins award
MANALAPAN, NJ – Monmouth County Clerk Christine Giordano Hanlon is pleased to announce that John Belding is the winner of the 2017 Jane G. Clayton Award. The award will be presented at the County Clerk’s Archives and History Day on Saturday, Oct. 14 at the Monmouth County Library Headquarters in Manalapan.
Named for the former County Clerk who established the Monmouth County Archives, the Jane G. Clayton Award has been given annually since 1997 to an individual who has made a major contribution to the preservation and knowledge of Monmouth County history.
“John Belding is the epitome of a town historian,” said Clerk Christine Hanlon. “In addition to publishing three books on the history of Brielle, he has served four terms as president of the Union Landing Historical Society during his forty years as a member. He is someone to be admired by all for his dedication to making the public aware of Monmouth County’s wonderful history.”
John Belding has been the Borough Historian for the Borough of Brielle for over 20 years. During the course of his work, Mr. Belding led the effort to restore the historic Osborn Family Burial Ground that contains the graves of Revolutionary and War of 1812 veterans. Mr. Belding also was largely responsible for the placement of “Brielle Historic Site” signs and for many other efforts to enhance public appreciation of his town’s history.”
This year’s Archives Week events from Oct. 10 to 19 will focus on the history of Monmouth County inventors and innovators and will feature movie screenings and seminars for people of all ages. The Clayton Award will be presented at the plenary session on Archives and History Day at 11 a.m. at the Monmouth County Library HQ in Manalapan. That day, more than 60 local and state history organizations will set-up displays on topics relating to New Jersey history and their organizations. With 300 expected attendees, Clerk Hanlon encourages all local historical organizations to participate in the event and to sign up for an exhibitor table.
“Archives and History Day is designed for the public to connect with archivists, historians, and other preservationists,” said Gary D. Saretzky, Monmouth County Archivist. “This event is a great opportunity for local organizations to showcase their work and educate the people about their preserved history.”
The event will also include a history forum, awards presentations, and a tour of the Monmouth County Archives, for which a reservation is required.
The deadline for New Jersey historical organizations to sign up for an Archives and History Day exhibitor table is Oct. 2, if tables remain available at that time.
