NJ Special Hawker and Peddlers Licenses are issued to honorably discharged soldiers, sailors and marines, nurses or army field clerks, and exempt firemen. The license provides the right to hawk, peddle and vend any goods, wares or merchandise or solicit trade with the state but shall not extend to or include any public beach or public boardwalk. Licenses may also be regulated by municipal ordinance on public streets and highways.
A license shall be effective only in the County wherein such licensee resides, therefore, the Monmouth County Clerk’s Office only issues Special Hawker and Peddlers Licenses to Monmouth County residents. If you live in another county, please see your County Clerk.
Applications are completed and licenses are issued in person at the County Clerk’s Main Freehold Office only in the Market Yard Public Parking Lot at 33 Mechanic Street in Freehold Borough. Please note that obtaining a Special Hawker and Peddlers License is a 2-step process requiring 2 visits to the County Clerk’s Main Freehold Office.
To obtain a license at the Monmouth County Clerk’s Office, the applicant must have resided within the State of New Jersey for at least six months and in Monmouth County at least three months immediately preceding his/her application for the license.
In the case of a person who has been honorably discharged from active military service of the United States, the applicant must present a Certificate of Honorable Discharge, in addition to proof of Monmouth County residency. For example, a DD-214 “Report of Separation” Form that lists the applicant’s “Character of Service” as “Honorable” must be presented.
In the case of an exempt fireman, the applicant must present a Certificate of Exemption, in addition to proof of Monmouth County residency. Licenses issued to exempt firemen shall expire three years after its date of issue.
