RECORD SERIES #: 7200
SERIES: Peter Knott Collection
VOLUME: .5 cubic feet
In March of 2002, Evelyn Stryker Lewis, the Neptune Township Historian and curator of the Neptune Township Historical Museum donated three boxes of manuscripts to the Monmouth County Archives. The collection had been found in the attic of one of the local Neptune residents. Concerned for the safekeeping of the papers, Ms. Lewis brought the three boxes to the Monmouth County Archives.
Ms. Lewis noted that a preliminary assessment of the papers indicated that the collection appeared to be deeds and surveys of properties located in the Ocean and Neptune Township areas. When the Monmouth County Archives began organizing the collection, it was clear the documents were related to the Peter Knott family and were, in fact, deeds relating to the purchases and sales of land by Peter Knott and his heirs. In some cases, the properties were described in surveys of the property boundaries. In other cases, maps of the survey were included.
The collection covers the period 1741 to 1835. There is also an 1888 lease by John P. L. Tilton for oyster beds in Shark River. The collection includes 120 land transfers for Shrewsbury, Howell, Stafford and Dover Townships. In some cases, there is genealogical information included on the transaction.
The collection is available for research at the Archives without restrictions. The box is arranged by date of transaction. There is also one box of oversized surveys and maps.
A computer printout, arranged alphabetically by names of grantee or grantor, is also available. The printout includes:
Name of individuals involved in the transaction
Date of transaction
Location – Township and, in some cases, more detailed location within Township
Instrument – map, survey, warrant, lease, agreement, deed
Notes – brief description of property and/or genealogical information
