In 1994, John A. McManemin donated approximately 75 volumes, many of which related to the naval history of the Revolutionary War, to the Monmouth County Library in Manalapan, as a consequence of an impending move to a new residence in Florida. The Library offered the Archives any volumes it didn’t need which might be useful for reference by Archives patrons. Twenty-six volumes that included information on the war in, or off the coast of, New Jersey, particularly as regards to Monmouth County, were selected by the Archives. Most of these books include McManemin’s name and a Ho-Ho-Kus address on the flyleaf. McManemin’s careful reading of these books is evidenced by numerous marked passages.
Included among the books acquired by the Archives was one book by McManemin, Irish American Sea Captains of the Revolutionary War, September 1994, published by xerography by the Ho-Ho-Kus Publishing Company in Spring Lake, Monmouth County. On the back of the title page of this book, a number of previous and planned books on naval history by
McManemin are listed. A search of the Research Libraries Information Network determined that McManemin’s other books were issued by the same publisher and are available at a number of university libraries (some cataloged under the name McManemin, others as McManemin with a space after Mc).
In June 2005, Dr. McManemin contacted the Archives and generously donated copies of nine other books he had published on naval history, most of them concerning the Revolutionary War.
An additional book by Jack Coggins on ships and seamen of the American Revolution was acquired from the Monmouth County Library in 2017 and added to the collection.
