Biography

A fifty-year resident of Holmdel, Gerald Ceres served as Holmdel Township Historian for approximately twenty years.  During his term as Historian, Ceres worked endlessly to preserve Holmdel’s historic past.  His excellent research uncovered a rich, fascinating history of Holmdel and the people who contributed to its history.

In 1986, Ceres self-published the 1851 Lightfoot map; the 1873 Beers, Comstock and Cline Atlas of Monmouth County; and the 1889 Wolverton Atlas of Monmouth County.  The maps and atlases had become extremely rare and the few originals remaining were quickly deteriorating.  Gerry realized that they would have been lost forever if something was not done to preserve the information. The atlas reprint project has provided hundreds of Monmouth County researchers and genealogists with an invaluable source of information.

Ceres stepped down from his position as Holmdel Township Historian in 2003.  In 2006, he was the recipient of the Jane G. Clayton Award for outstanding effort to preserve Monmouth County history.
