Tax notices were sent to property owners by Municipal Tax Collectors. Names of those who were delinquent were sent to the County Clerk along with the county share of the collected taxes. When the delinquent taxes were finally paid, the original notices or in some cases handwritten notes or letters were sent to the Municipal Tax Collector who then forwarded them to the County Clerk along with the tax monies.
These notices cover the period from 1846 to 1921 and come in a variety of shapes and forms. The incorporation date of many of Monmouth County’s municipalities coincides with the initial year that notices were sent.
This collection is open to researchers.
Monmouth County Tax Receipts is available for use in its original format. A container list is included in this finding aid.
The Tax Receipts are arranged alphabetically by town and chronologically within each town.
