James Abram Garfield Memorial, Long Branch
Dedicated Labor Day, September 2, 1918
In October of 1998, at the suggestion of Gary D. Saretzky, Archivist, Monmouth County Archives, the Monmouth County Historical Commission queried all Monmouth County towns for a list of public monuments. Twenty-four towns responded, listing 121 monuments. William E. Morrissey compiled this list of their responses. Since 1998, and the tragedy of 9/11, more monuments have been erected.
This series is a list of 126 memorial monuments in twenty-four towns in Monmouth County as of October 19, 1998. Memorials are wide ranging, including a mural, bust, statues, obelisk, bells, railroad car wheels, etc. Locations also vary, such as municipal buildings, parks, athletic fields and other public places.
This collection is open to researchers.
A printed copy, sorted by town, is available in the Reference section of the Archives reading room. An Access database, available in the Archives, is sortable by town, location, description, and notes. Five more monuments were added to the list from Meredith Bzdak’s “Public Sculpture in New Jersey: Monuments to Collective Identity,” 1999.
