ABSTRACT
This is a large and varied collection of reports throughout the county that illustrate the scope of the Planning Board’s responsibilities and efforts to improve life in Monmouth County.
HISTORY
The Monmouth County Planning Board was established in 1954. The objectives of the Board are mandated in R.S. 40:27 through 40:27-11. Functions include the preparation of a master plan, encouraging municipal cooperation in matters pertaining to the County Master Plan and advising elected and appointed officials and the public at large in all general planning functions; assisting the Board of Chosen Freeholders and other county departments in carrying out their assigned functions; assisting municipalities and organizations in all matters relating to the physical and economic development of the county; providing high quality research and analysis for the proper management of our County’s resources; and providing data to the general public.

The Board reviews and serves as a depository for all municipal plans and ordinances; reviews and approves all land development pursuant to the County subdivision and site plan resolution; prepares reports and studies relating to the physical, economic, and social development of the county; maintains a data base of statistics and maps; serves as a research agency for the Board of Chosen Freeholders and other County departments; provides staff assistance to the Environmental Council, Transportation Coordinating Committee, Agricultural Development Board, and the Solid Waste Advisory Committee; and administers the Community Development Program on behalf of the Board of Chosen Freeholders.

SCOPE & CONTENT
The records transferred in 1998 and 2000 by the Planning Board consisted of one hundred sixty-two reports and other publications prepared by several Monmouth County government entities including Board of Chosen Freeholders, Board of Health, Department of Planning, Environmental Council, and the Planning Board itself. Nearly forty additional documents have been added since then through supplementary acquisitions. Additional reports and publications are added when received by the Archives.

This collection is open to researchers.

There are no restrictions on use. Some documents after 2000 are available on the Planning Board’s website which also includes documents not in the Archives. See also Related Material below.
ARRANGEMENT
Most of the records are arranged chronologically by year then alphabetically by title. The last box contains records of the Transportation Coordinating Committee, 1974-1990. The digitized records are searchable by Year, or Document Title at OPRS.

ACQUISITION INFORMATION
Accessions 1998-02 and 2000-03 were transferred to the Monmouth County Archives from the Monmouth County Planning Board, which thereafter sent additional documents as they were issued. On January 28, 2014, librarian Beth Miller at Monmouth County Library, Eastern Branch, transferred more Planning Board documents that were added to this series under Accession 2014-01.

The Monmouth County Planning Board records transferred in 2014 were processed by Tara Christiansen. The Planning Board finding aid was updated July 9, 2014, and July 23, 2015 by George Joynson, and in February 2018 by Mary Hussey.
