The Sanborn Map Company started making maps in 1866 and is still in the business. The maps were initially used to estimate fire insurance risks. The large scale lithographed street plans are now used for historical research, preservation and restoration efforts. In 1930, the Sanborn Map Company published a five-volume set of maps of the Jersey Coast.
Archives has Volume Two and Volume Five of the 1930 Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps in color. Structures are identified as fireproof, iron, stone, concrete, tile, brick, veneer, frame, number of windows, doors and stories, stable, garage, elevator, boiler, chimney, fire escape, sprinklers automatic, chemical, or not sprinklered, gasoline tanks, fire alarm boxes and more.
Volume Two is titled “New Jersey Coast New Jersey Volume Two,” and covers Allenhurst, Deal, Ocean Grove and Neptune, Asbury Park, Interlaken, Loch Arbor and Ocean Township. Volume Two has updates from June 1940, April 1956, September 1958, February 1962, and February 1963.
Volume Five is titled “New Jersey Coast New Jersey Volume Five,” and covers Avon, Bradley Beach, Belmar, Neptune City, South Belmar, parts of Neptune and Wall Township. Volume Five has updates from November 1938, April 1949, and April 1956.
Updates of sections are cut out and glued onto the original page, so it is sometimes possible to see the earlier version under the glued on addition.
This volume is open to researchers.
The original volumes may be inspected at Archives during regular research hours, M-F, 9-4.
