The Monmouth County Archives has three nineteenth century atlases:

  • Atlas of Monmouth County, by F.W. Beers, 1873
  • Atlas of New Jersey Coast, by Woolman & Rose, 1879
  • Wolverton’s Atlas of Monmouth County New Jersey, 1889

From recent and actual surveys and records, under the superintendence of F. W. Beers, published by Beers, Comstock and Cline, 36 Vesey Street, New York, 1873. Engraved on Stone by Louise E. Neuman, 36 Vesey St., NY; Lithog Power Press Print of Charles Hart, 36 Vesey Street, NY; entered in the Office of the Librarian of Congress at Washington, DC.

This atlas has 121 plates and contains: a table of distances measured on the nearest public roads, the 1870 population census of white and colored for each county, a map of New Jersey, a topographical map of Monmouth County, then names of local businesses, hotels, saloons, restaurants, manufacturers, livery stables, newspapers, oyster planters, physicians, ship carpenters and other businesses, county offices, attorneys, real estate and insurance, schools, bankers, merchants and dealers, and builders.

The original was reprinted in 1986 by the Holmdel Historical Society and Gerrit Publishers, Lincroft, NJ 07738, printed by Harmony Press, Inc., Phillipsburg NJ. The copy in the Archives reading room is a reprint of the original.

Compiled from actual surveys, state and county official records and private plans, under the direction of Chester Wolverton and Forsey Breou, C.E., published by Chester Wolverton, 243 Broadway, New York, 1889. Entered in the Office of the Librarian of Congress, Washington DC. A. H. Mueller, Lithographer, 530 Locust Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

This atlas has 43 plates which contain important historical information and dates of communities, along with names of residents next to their homes. It includes a driving road chart, and a list of principal hotels of Monmouth County. The original was reprinted in 1986 by Holmdel Historical Society and Gerrit Publishers, Lincroft, NJ 07738, printed by Harmony Press, Inc., Phillipsburg NJ.

Besides town maps, it includes 1875 Census abstract, farm valuations, 1870 Agricultural census, 1876 Cranberry crop, school summary and teacher salaries, shipwrecks 1779-1877, lighthouses, yachts, fish, fowl, biographical sketches, illustrations of residences, businesses, cemeteries and nautical charts.


This collection is open to researchers.
