Archives created an index of 2,934 name changes gleaned from Common Pleas books and loose papers, County Court and Superior Court records and Name Change Ledger Books. Some but not all naturalization records that include name changes are included in the name change database and should be searched separately. A limited number of name changes are searchable online, by old name or new name, in the Name Changes on the Archives searchable databases website.
Note: Archives does not have adoption records or divorce records or name changes from them.
Any adult person can choose to go by a name different than what is on their birth certificate without filing legally, but it is best to file legally. A person can legally change their name through court filing, divorce or dissolution, adoption, naturalization, or for any reason other than to commit crime.

The current method of legally changing your name in New Jersey is to file a Complaint for Name Change in the Law Division of the Superior Court along with the $250 fee.
