Freeholder Resolution

These Resolutions are formal statements of an official decision or opinion, made after the Board of Chosen Freeholders has voted.
These resolutions were included in records maintained for the Freeholders by the Office of Clerk of the Board and transferred to the Archives. With the approval of Clerk of the Board Jim Gray, the files were weeded, principally by Archives staff member James Vacchiano, to remove material duplicative of what is included in the Freeholders Minute Books. After separation, nine record cartons were retained and added to the Freeholder Subject Files. Clerk Gray then requested that copies of Freeholder Resolutions with raised seals be removed from the remaining 89 record cartons. His principal reason was that the resolutions in the Minute Books are photocopies and do not have raised seals. Accordingly, Archives staff, again principally Vacchiano, went through the 89 boxes and pulled out the resolutions, without the attachments that may be found in the minutes. The original resolutions with the raised seals were then sorted numerically and stored in seventeen manuscript boxes.
During 1989-1998, more than one thousand resolutions were brought before the Board of Chosen Freeholders annually. Although the boxes contain thousands of resolutions, the number sequence is not complete and there are more resolutions available for some years than others.
These records are open to researchers.
Researchers should be aware that the minutes are a more complete official record of the Board of Chosen Freeholders.
Freeholder Resolutions 1989-1998 are arranged by year then numerically in 17 manuscript boxes. The Resolutions are in a number sequence that begins with “1” each year.
