Featured Speaker: Joseph W. Becton, “Music of the Civil War Era” Joseph W. Becton of Philadelphia is an educator, historian, tour guide, and musician. Becton formerly served as Park Ranger Supervisor at Independence National Historic Park and Director of Visitor Services at Historic Fort Mifflin, and is cofounder of the 3rd Regiment United States Colored Troops Civil War re-enactors. He presents programs regularly on Civil War Music, African American Troops in the Civil War, Evolution of the Blues, and other topics, and performs as leader of the Cobalt Blues Band. |

Other History Programs During Archives Week in the Monmouth County Library
Tuesday, October 7: 2 p.m., movie on a Civil War theme, hosted by the Monmouth County Library: Cold Mountain (2003) (R). In the waning days of the American Civil War, a wounded soldier embarks on a perilous journey back home to Cold Mountain, North Carolina, to reunite with his sweetheart. Based on the book by Charles Frazier.
Wednesday, October 8, 9:30 -11:45 a.m.: Workshop, Best Practices for Public History and Library Internships. Presenters include experienced internship supervisors, former interns, and representatives from the MLIS program, School of Communication and Information, Rutgers University, and Public History Internship Program, History Department, Rutgers University. (Participants will have a short reading assignment before the workshop. To register, 732-308-3771 x3776)
Wednesday, October 8, 1-2:30 p.m.: Lecture by Gary D. Saretzky, “Ere the Shadow Fades”: New Jersey’s Civil War Photographers (registration not required).

The exhibit in the Library gallery of the Monmouth County Library, “The Civil War: New Jersey in Focus,” was curated by Gary D. Saretzky, with exhibit preparation by Eugene Osovitz and contributions by about a dozen collaborators as listed in the exhibit catalog. Editorial assistance for the exhibition catalog was ably provided by Joe Bilby and Patrick Caiazzo; Aaron Townsend designed the attractive covers. Additional exhibits in the Library lobby were provided courtesy of Ted Bell, Tom Burke, David Martin, and Elsalyn Palmisano. In addition, institutional contributions to the lobby exhibit were facilitated by Laura Poll, Monmouth County Historical Association; Joe Klett, Veronica Calder, and Joanne Nestor, New Jersey State Archives, and Elizabeth McDermott, Red Bank Public Library. Principal funding for Archives Week was provided by Monmouth County Clerk M. Claire French and the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders.
The grand prize for the New Jersey History Game is a luncheon with the County Clerk, M. Claire French. Other prizes include books and other items donated by the Monmouth County Archives; Monmouth County Genealogy Society; Monmouth County Historical Association; Elsalyn Palmisano; Rutgers University Special Collections & University Archives (courtesy of Ron Becker); Gary D. Saretzky; and the late George H. Moss, Jr.
